U.S. lawmakers critique Pakistan’s governance as ‘military rule with civilian facade’

Over 60 US lawmakers have labeled the country’s governance as “military rule with a civilian facade,” reflecting deep concerns over the erosion of democratic principles and increasing military influence in civilian affairs.

The statement came in a letter to President Joe Biden, highlighting the aftermath of Pakistan’s controversial parliamentary elections in February, which were marred by widespread irregularities, including allegations of electoral fraud and systematic voter disenfranchisement.

Lawmakers pointed to these events as clear indicators of a troubling trend toward authoritarianism.

The letter specifically called for the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 amid charges he denies, including corruption.

Lawmakers expressed fears for Khan’s safety and well-being, urging the Biden administration to secure guarantees from the Pakistani government and facilitate US Embassy visits to him.

“The government has intensified its crackdown on social media and the internet as part of a broader effort to suppress political activism, which it deems to be ‘anti-state propaganda’ and digital terrorism,” it said.

“These repressive measures [are] an attack on fundamental human rights… In addition, Pakistani authorities are increasingly engaging in transnational repression… We join our Pakistani American constituents, as well as community leaders and elected officials throughout our country and around the world, in standing in solidarity with the people of Pakistan and their struggle to rebuild a genuinely representative democracy.”

Lawmakers expressed concern that the military’s growing dominance stifled political dissent and undermines civil liberties.

They noted a crackdown on social media and increased pressure on journalists as part of a broader strategy to suppress opposition voices and maintain control over the political narrative.
