The Adiala Jail administration has rebuffed PTI’s allegations over the lack of facilities for incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan. It claimed that Khan was given all facilities as per his prison class.
“There is no truth to the news circulating on social media and among political parties regarding the PTI founder [Imran Khan]’s condition,” the jail administration said in a statement on Saturday.
Under the Pakistan Prisons Rules of 1978, convicted inmates are categorised into three groups: superior class, ordinary class, and political class.
The superior class is divided into A and B class prisoners while the ordinary class consists of all prisoners who do not fall into the superior category. The political class includes individuals who commit offenses motivated by political reasons, rather than personal gain, and is not considered criminal in nature; these individuals do not require reformative or correctional treatment.
The PTI founder was being provided with all the facilities available under Class B status, the jail has claimed. Authorities noted that special attention was being given to the founder’s food, study, and exercise routines.
“Electricity is supplied uninterrupted in the cell of the PTI founder.”
Under Class B provisions, it added that a prisoner chef has been assigned to prepare meals separately for the PTI founder. This professional chef prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner according to the founder’s preferences.
Khan “enjoys a variety of meals” while incarcerated in the Adiala Jail. For breakfast, the PTI founder consumes coffee, Chia seeds, beetroot juice, yoghurt, chapati, biscuits, and dates.
During lunch, the PTI founder has a meal that includes curry pakora, desi chicken, yoghurt, chapati, salad, green tea, and mutton. For dinner, the menu features porridge, coconut, coconut juice, and grapes.
“All meals are prepared under the supervision of the assistant superintendent and the food is delivered after proper checking.” Moreover, a qualified doctor conducts health check-ups for the PTI founder “three times a day” and all of his vitals are checked providing thorough medical oversight during the incarceration.
