Indian Congress leader Baba Siddique was shot dead by assailants in Mumbai on Saturday, according to media reports. He was struck in the stomach and chest.
Police have claimed to have detained two individuals for questioning.
The attack took place near Siddique’s office between 9:15pm and 9:20pm, close to Ram Mandir, where he was celebrating Dussehra by bursting firecrackers.
While Siddique was celebrating Dussehra by bursting firecrackers, three assailants approached in a vehicle, their faces concealed with handkerchiefs.
Bystanders transported Siddique to Lilavati Hospital following the attack.
Authorities were notified and police arrived at the scene. Two suspects have been detained—one from Uttar Pradesh and the other from Haryana—while a third suspect remains at large, with efforts underway to apprehend him.
In light of the incident, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has cancelled all his scheduled engagements for Sunday and is expected to return to Mumbai at midnight.
