Legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis announces return to big screen after 7 years

Legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis is making a comeback to feature films, with his son directing.

He will star in Anemone, the debut film from Ronan Day-Lewis. Produced by Focus Features and Plan B, this marks Daniel Day-Lewis’ first acting role since Phantom Thread in 2017, which he had previously indicated would be his last before retirement.

The father-son team co-wrote the screenplay, focusing on familial relationships, particularly those between fathers, sons, and brothers. The cast also includes Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with the talented visual artist Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative partner,” said Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features. “They’ve crafted an outstanding script, and we can’t wait to share their vision with audiences, working alongside Plan B.”

The creative team features director of photography Ben Fordesman, costume designer Jane Petrie, and production designer Chris Oddy.

Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution for Focus.

Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is a filmmaker and painter, with a solo exhibition opening in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Daniel Day-Lewis is a three-time Oscar winner, widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. He has won Academy Awards for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln, and received nominations for In the Name of the Father, Gangs of New York, and Phantom Thread.

In a 2017 statement, Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting, expressing deep gratitude to his collaborators and audiences over the years.
