Filmmaker Kiran Rao is optimistic that her latest project, Laapataa Ladies, will be chosen as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards.
The comedy-drama, produced by her ex-husband Aamir Khan, delves into gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural India, following two brides as they uncover new truths about themselves.
In a recent media interview with an Indian media, Rao expressed her hopes for the film to be considered for the Oscars but recognised the competitive nature of the selection process. “I’m hoping Laapataa Ladies will be in the running,” she stated, “but I’m sure the best film will be chosen, regardless of which one it is.”
Although Laapataa Ladies received positive reviews from both critics and audiences after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, it had a modest box office performance, grossing 250 million Indian rupees. The film later premiered on Netflix in April, attracting additional viewers and gaining popularity.
Rao’s film has made a significant impact by promoting women’s education and empowerment while addressing gender issues in India. Its influence was recently highlighted when the film was screened at the Supreme Court of India for judges and their families.
The story revolves around two brides who find themselves accidentally swapped during a train journey right after their weddings.
