The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has issued an immediate recall alert for five syrup products due to contamination with ethylene glycol and di-ethylene glycol.
These products include:
Cestonil Plus syrup with batch number 061357 and composition thiamine 1.75mg, Riboflavin 2.62mg, Pyridoxine 1.54mg, Nicotinamide 10.50mg manufactured by M/s Razzee Therapeutics, Lahore.
Texcol DM 10mg/5ml syrup with batch number 09980 and composition Dextromethorphan manufactured by M/s Razzee Therapeutics, Lahore.
Speczine 5mg/5ml Syrup with batch number 280 287 and composition Promethazine manufactured by M/s Spectrum Laboratories, Lahore.
Aphylin Syrup with batch number 24B056 and composition Aminophylline 32mg, Diphenhydramine 8mg, Ammonium HCl 30mg manufactured by M/s Obsons Pharmaceuticals, Lahore.
Zolint Suspension with batch number 24003 and composition Furazolidone 25mg/5ml, Metronidazole 75mg/5ml manufactured by M/s Libra (Private) Ltd, Peshawar.
The contamination was identified by the Directorate of Drugs Control (DDC) in Punjab. Analysis from Drug Testing Laboratories (DTLs) confirmed the presence of these harmful chemicals, prompting DRAP to declare the products substandard.
DRAP advises health professionals and consumers to avoid using these five syrup products. Di-ethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG) contaminated oral preparations can lead to serious health risks.
