Slovakian swimmer Tamara Potocka collapsed by the poolside after competing in a qualifying heat of the women’s 200-metre individual medley event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris on Friday.
The 21-year-old Potocka had just finished her race when she suddenly passed out on the pool deck. Dozens of medical personnel immediately rushed to her aid, providing the swimmer with an oxygen mask as she was carried off on a stretcher.
According to a statement from the Slovakian Olympic team, the cause of Potocka’s collapse was an asthma attack. “She has since been given oxygen therapy and during the procedure has communicated,” the team confirmed.
The incident raised concerns about the health and safety of the athletes competing at the highest level of international competition. While the exact details surrounding Potocka’s medical emergency remain unclear, the swift response from the medical staff on site suggests they were able to provide the necessary care to the stricken swimmer.
The Slovakian Olympic team’s statement indicating that Potocka has communicated following the incident provides some reassurance that her condition has stabilised. The long-term implications of this medical scare remain to be seen as the young swimmer continues her recovery.
Potocka finished seventh in her heat with a time of 2 minutes, 14.20 seconds.
