In a captivating teaser, Netflix has teased the upcoming season, which will take on an Olympic-inspired theme. The video showcases a race of individuals in green tracksuits, running not for medals but for their very lives, as a watchful overseer keeps a keen eye on the proceedings.
“It’s been three years, are you ready to play again?” teased Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series’ executive producer, writer, and director, hinting at the high-stakes, survival-themed nature of the new season.
The synopsis reveals that the story will follow the journey of Player 456, the winner of the previous Squid Game, as he remains determined to uncover the identities of those responsible for the vicious game and put an end to their deadly sport. With his newfound fortune, Gi-hun sets out on a dangerous path, one that promises to be even more treacherous than he could have imagined.
In a heartfelt director’s note, Hwang expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting the world of Squid Game, stating, “The real game begins. It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place. I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season.”
Hwang recalled the surreal feeling of returning to the set for the second season. “On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of ‘Squid Game’.’ It almost felt surreal.”
The director expressed his anticipation for fans to once again immerse themselves in the high-stakes world of Squid Game, noting, “I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well.”
