The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) is set to convene on July 19 to discuss the appointment of four retired judges as ad hoc judges to the Supreme Court.

This move aims to address the growing backlog of cases in the country’s highest court.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has nominated Justice (r) Mushir Alam and Justice (r) Maqbool Baqir, Justice (r) Mazhar Alam Miankhel and Justice (r) Sardar Tariq Masood.

The proposal to appoint retired judges as ad hoc judges for a period of three years is in line with constitutional provisions that require a minimum of 17 judges for such appointments.

The notification outlining the rationale for this decision highlights the need to effectively manage the increasing number of cases and reduce the backlog, which has been a persistent issue for the Supreme Court.

The JCP meeting will take place at 3 pm on July 19 in the Supreme Court’s conference room.
