Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has claimed that Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not the only party they were facing in the marathon election as intelligence agencies, governance structure, and half of the judiciary were also against them.
“We fought election against BJP, institutions of India, whole governance structure, intelligence agencies, and half of the judiciary as Narendra Modi and Amit Shah had captured, intimidated, and harassed them,” he said while addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Modi’s own BJP was falling short of a majority of its own in the 543-member parliament, the trends showed. Having to depend on allies to form the government could introduce some uncertainty into policymaking after a decade in which Modi has ruled with an authoritative hold.
He also spoke about the media’s role, saying that many journalists played their role in their domain to report facts.
“The fight was to save the constitution and I must tell you I knew people will rise to save the constitution when they [rivals] froze our accounts, jailed chief ministers, broke parties,” Rahul said and thanked his supporters and allies.
“You have taken a big step to save the constitution,” he said and praised the Congress alliance.
While speaking about the falling stocks, he said that Asia’s richest man Gautam Adani’s shares fell after Modi’s defeat and described it as a “direct relationship with corruption.”
Rahul said: “The nation has told Narendra Modi that we don’t want you and this is the main thing the election has said. The country has unanimously and clearly stated. We do not want Mr Narendra Modi and Mr Amit Shah to be involved in the running of this country. We do not like the way they have run this country.”
He went on to describe the election results as a “huge message” to Modi.
