The King and Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, are set to observe the 80th anniversary of the historic D-Day Landings. From June 5th to June 6th, 2024, various events will take place to honor this significant milestone.
On June 5th, The King and Queen, accompanied by The Prince of Wales, will attend the UK’s national event in Portsmouth. The Princess Royal, who serves as Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Regina Rifles, will join Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence in unveiling a statue of a Second World War Canadian Royal Regina Rifleman in Normandy. Additionally, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence will participate in a Royal British Legion Service of the Royal event at the Bayeux War Cemetery. As President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), The Princess Royal will also attend an annual service of remembrance at Bayeux Cathedral.
On June 6th, The King and Queen will attend another event, organized by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer. His Majesty, as the Patron of the Royal British Legion, will play an active role in the event. Meanwhile, The Prince of Wales will attend the Canadian commemorative ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, joining Canadian D-Day and Second World War Veterans, as well as Canadian Armed Forces personnel and youth representatives. The Prince of Wales will also participate in the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach in Saint Laurent sur Mer, where he will be joined by over 25 Heads of State and veterans from around the world.

Furthermore, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will be present at the Royal British Legion’s Service of Remembrance, held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Alongside veterans and their families, they will pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will attend an evening of music-led storytelling titled “D-Day 80: Remembering the Normandy Landings” at the Royal Albert Hall.
