In a touching tribute, India Hicks, the goddaughter of King Charles, commemorated her mother Lady Pamela’s 95th birthday and shared a surprising revelation about her birth. Taking to her Instagram account, India expressed her love and admiration for her mother while divulging the story behind Lady Pamela’s unexpected early arrival in 1929.
India’s heartfelt message began with the statement, “My mother’s arrival into this world was somewhat of a surprise.” She went on to recount how her grandmother, Edwina Mountbatten, who was eight months pregnant with Lady Pamela at the time, embarked on a trip to Spain for a few days. Undeterred by her condition, Lady Pamela’s determined grandmother forged ahead with her travel plans. However, during the trip, it became apparent to her that Lady Pamela’s birth might be more imminent than expected.
Lady Pamela’s birth took place at the Ritz Hotel in Barcelona, and due to the urgency of the situation, an ear, nose, and throat specialist was hastily summoned to deliver her. Lady Pamela’s mother, Edwina, temporarily made do with sleeping in a “little dog basket” until more suitable arrangements could be made.
Lady Pamela, who served as one of the Queen’s bridesmaids in 1947 and accompanied her on royal tours as her lady-in-waiting, has now become the oldest living descendant of Queen Victoria following Queen Elizabeth’s passing. India’s tribute to her mother on this momentous occasion concluded with the words, “A robust beginning for a robust life. Today, my mother is 95 years old. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM.”
India Hicks herself is known for her role as one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. She is the daughter of renowned interior decorator David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks, who previously served as one of the late Queen’s ladies-in-waiting and is the daughter of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India.
The heartwarming tribute from India Hicks to her mother Lady Pamela not only celebrates a significant milestone but also reveals the remarkable circumstances surrounding Lady Pamela’s birth, making it a cherished and surprising anecdote in their family history.
