Senate elections: How the transferable vote system works

Elections on 48 seats in the Senate have been scheduled for April 2. Voting will take place in the National and provincial assemblied simultaneously.

A total of 12 seats are up for election in Punjab, 12 in Sindh, 11 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 11 in Punjab. Elections will also be held on two seats from Islamabad.

The election to the upper house of the parliament takes place through a single transferable vote.

In this system, the general seats in an assembly are divided by the numbr of Senate seats for the province. Each voter will express their preference via secret ballot.

However, if one candidate receives the number of votes required to be successful, the other votes will be ‘transferred’ and will go on to count for the next candidate.

Byt he division formula, 53 votes are required in the Punjab Assembly to win a Senate seat. The number comes at 24 in Sindh, 20 in KP and nine in Balochistan.

However, in Islamabad, the decision will take place by a simple majority of the members of the National Assembly.

The number of technocrat seats will also be divided according to the number of members in the assembly.
