Customs arrest govt official at Torkham border with $70,000

The customs authorities have claimed to have arrested the cook of the border security force at Torkham trying to hand over two packets full of US dollars, containing $70,000, to an unknown Afghan national at the border zero crossing point.

The incident occurred on Friday, Dawn reported, a second such event where government officials were found involved in the illegal practice.

He was named as Zakriya, a cook of the official mess of the border security force, according to officials. A sepoy of the Customs Department arrested him.

They added that the Afghan managed to flee back to his country while Zakriya was taken into custody and the foreign currency was recovered from his possession.

Investigations were under way to find out how an employee of a law enforcement agency was involved in currency smuggling at border crossing between the two countries.
