The federal cabinet has accepted newly sworn in Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb’s application for again seeking Pakistan’s citizenship while acting on the interior ministry’s recommendation.
Aurangzeb, who is part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Shari’s 19-member cabinet, is a citizen of the Netherlands, the state-run news agency reported on Monday.
The approval was given in the first meeting of the federal cabinet in Islamabad.
Aurangzeb resigned from his position as leader of the country’s largest bank, HBL said in a letter to the stock exchange earlier in the day.
Aurangzeb was picked over several veterans previously involved in handling the $350 billion economy, including four-time finance minister Ishaq Dar, as the country looks to plot a path out of its economic difficulties.
