SP killed, three policemen injured in Mardan attack

A superintendent of police was killed in a terror attack in the Katlang area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mardan district on Tuesday.

The deceased SP was identified as Aijaz Khan, according to police. Deputy Superintendent of Police Naseem Khan, Mansoor, and Saleem were injured in the attack.

Rescue 1122 officials moved the casualties to the MMC hospital.

According to the DPO, the police responded with firing of their own, killing two highly wanted terrorists.

SP Aijaz Khan’s funeral prayers were offered in the police lines after which his body was sent to his ancestral village Sherpao in Charsadda.

Pakistan has recently seen an uptick in terrorism, particularly in KP and Balochistan. At least four police officials were killed in an attack on a police patrol in Dera Ismail Khan on February 8 when tens of millions of people went to polling stations to vote in the country.

On February 5, at least 10 officers were killed and six wounded when terrorists attacked a police station in Dera Ismail Khan. Unidentified terrorists with “Indian weapons” attacked the station, according to police.

At least 28 people lost their lives in back-to-back blasts outside election offices in Balochistan’s Qila Saifullah and Pishin on the eve of general elections.

In an interview with journalist Asma Shirazi last year, the KP Police inspector general explained why the police were attacked in the province by terrorists.

“Militants target police as they are a soft and a prime target,” Ansari said and explained that policemen were easily identifiable because of their rank, uniform, and mobile van.
