Pakistan Peoples Party is set to get the Senate chairman’s slot after reaching an agreement with the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, and a favourite name has already emerged.
Party sources said on Wednesday that Yousaf Raza Gillani is currently the favourite to get the slot. Gillani is already part of the upper house and his tenure will last another three years.
If he becomes chairman, Gillani will vacate the NA-148 seat that he won in February 8’s election.
He had received 67,326 votes to beat PTI-backed Taimur Malik, who received 67,033 votes.
The sources added that one of his sons is likely to run for the election on his vacated seat. Gilani’s sons, Ali Musa and Abdul Qadir, have already won from NA-151 and 152 respectively.
An veteran PPP leader, Gillani has served as the prime minister of Pakistan as well as the speaker of the National Assembly.
