The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leads the race for National Assembly seats in Karachi after securing 17 out of the total 22 seats, according to the provisional results announced by the country’s top electoral authority. The PPP managed to bag seven.
Seats for the lower house of Parliament in Pakistan’s economic hub hold significance in the country’s political spectrum in case parties fail to achieve a simple majority.
Elections were held for 265 seats in the National Assembly on February 8 and a political party needs 134 seats for a simple majority.
Every government intends to have control of Karachi because of its prominence in the country’s economy. In this effort, the MQM-P has been a major pawn in the formation of a coalition government at the Centre.
Many analysts describe it as a “kingmaker party”.
Although independent candidates have outnumbered the political parties, the PML-N has emerged as the single largest party in the elections. And, the N-league has begun efforts to form an alliance including one with the party winning in Karachi.
