The issue of providing funds for the 2024 general elections is now resolved as the Finance Division on Tuesday said it has released Rs17.4 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
While announcing it on X, the ministry said,’’ Finance Division has released Rs17.4 billion to ECP in addition to Rs10.0 billion released in July 2023 for conduct of general elections in the country. This brings the total released amount to Rs27.4 billion for holding general elections.’’
The development comes a day after ECP raised alarm over the delay in the release of the urgently needed amount for the general elections, set for February 8, 2024.
Earlier, The Ministry of Finance failed to release funds for holding general elections stoking fears about election delays.
Consequently, the ECP summoned the finance secretary, who held a meeting with the ECP officials over a lack of funds.
Subsequently, the finance secretary had assured the electoral watchdog that the funds required by the ECP urgently would be released in a day or two.
Today, In a post X, the finance ministry informed to release said funds.
