A sessions court in Islamabad recorded the statements of Mufti Saeed and Awn Chaudhry in the illegal nikkah case against Imran Khan and Bushra Begum on Tuesday.
Civil Judge Qudratullah presided over the hearing in the case filed by Khawar Maneka on Tuesday. Mufti Saeed, Awn Chaudhry and Muhammad Latif appeared at witnesses for the petitioner.
Mufti Saeed was first called to record his statement. However, when he tried to read a written statement, the judge told him that people who read from paper are usually lying.
Saeed told the court that he had officiated the nikkah between Khan and Bushra in January 2018 and had been told that it fulfilled all requirements of sharia.
He said that he was once again called to officiate a verbal nikkah in February. He alleged that Imran Khan told him that the first nikkah was necessary in January to get him a position of power.
Awn Chaudhry also made his statement before the court after Saeed. He told the court that he was Khan’s political and personal secretary and was extremely close to the political leader. He added that he saw Khan’s family matters as well.
Chaudhry told the court that Khan had divorced Reham Khan via email on the advice of Bushra Begum.
He added that Khan would visit Bushra for ‘spiritual peace’, often unaccompanied.
Chaudhry also echoed Saeed’s claims that the nikkah as performed twice, first in January and then in February of 2018. He claimed that he was witness to both nikkah ceremonies.
However, statements from all witnesses could not be recorded and the the hearing was adjourned till December 2.
