Many cricket fans mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday for bringing “bad luck” to their national cricket team in the World Cup final.
Australia became world champions for the sixth time after beating the hosts in the Men’s 50-over World Cup final, which was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India.
Many Indian celebrities were among the crowd at the world’s biggest stadium. Although Modi arrived late at the stadium as compared to other Indian celebrities who were seen before the match, many fans on social media started to mock their PM with the hashtag “panauti” which means misfortune.
In one of the clips, he was seen waving to the fans.
“You can name a stadium after yourself but you will remain a bad luck for India,” wrote one of the users on X after defeat. He also shared a picture of Modi.
Another user blamed Modi for the defeat.
There were also claims that India lost all past cricket competitions due to the incumbent prime minister.
Was the match “jinxed”?
