The International Cricket Council Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with “immediate effect” due to the interference.
In a statement on Friday, the ICC said that the SLC had breached its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.
“The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course,” it said.
The development comes after Sri Lanka’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked the national cricket board on Monday, days after a humiliating defeat by India at the World Cup. But, the next day, the Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal quashed the sports minister’s decision to sack the country’s cricket board and restored the expelled officials on Tuesday pending a full hearing.
Earlier this week, Sri Lanka’s parliament asked the country’s cricket board to resign on Thursday after accusing it of unprecedented corruption involving millions of dollars.
The ICC Board is set to meet on November 21, after which the future course of action is expected to be clearer.
Sri Lanka is scheduled to host the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in January and February 2024.
The Sri Lankan cricket team did not have a memorable time at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as they did not perform well at the mega event. They were only able to have two wins. The side stands at number eight in the points table.
