Transnational repression anywhere would be a concern for us: State Dept

The US State Department said that it finds transnational repression to be a point of concern no matter where it happens in the world, as a diplomatic scuffle continues between India and Canada over the killing of a Sikh leader.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the concern over transnational ‘repression’ has already been voiced on multiple occasions.

“Transnational repression would be a concern for us anywhere in the world. That is our policy. We have made it clear over – on a number of occasions,” Miller said.

However, he declined to comment specifically on US citizen Gurpatwant Singh being labelled as a terrorist by India.

The spokesperson also declined to comment on reports of Pakistan providing weapons to Ukraine.

“So we always let other countries speak to the nature of their assistance to Ukraine. We never confirm it on their behalf before they do,” Miller said.
