All ministries and divisions under the federal government have been ordered to prepare plans for ‘economic revival’ after Army Chief General Asim Munir threw his weight behind a reform agenda, sources said on Saturday.
The sources added that the army chief asked the government to make ‘bold’ plans and assured authorities of the army’s support in getting them implemented. The development came in the last meeting of the Special Investment Facilitation Council.
The ministry of finance has been tasked with preparing a plan that helps reduce deficits and improves debt managements. Also among the agendy items are capital market reforms and work on the new NFC award in light of the latest census.
The SBP has been asked to find banks involved in illegal LCs and manipulation of foreign currency. The FBR has been asked to present a comprehensive plan to broaden the tax net and make sure tax targets are met.
The next meeting of the SIFC will also involve an update on the privatisation plans for PIA, Steel Mill, LNG plants, DISCOs and gas pipelines. The minsitry of privatisation has been asked to provide cutoff dates for each project.
The finance minsiter will also oversee a new media strategy that helps publicise the government’s economic strategy among the masses
