Several policemen, locals injured in clash during anti-encroachment drive in Islamabad

Atleast 11 Islamabad police personnel were injured when residents of Chauntra area in Islamabad clashed with the police during an operation against the land mafia. Locals said three protestors were also injured.

The Capital Development Authority of Islamabad had launched an operation against encroachment in the Sinyari village in Islamabad. However, unidentified men allegedly fired upon the officials and plted them with stones. As a result, 11 police officials were injured including SP Tahir Niazi and two DSPs.

A huge contingent of police was deployed in the area to maintain law-and-order situation while the police also fired tear gases at the demonstrators.A statement from the police said that the law would take its course against the culprits.

Jamat-e-Islami leader Mian Aslam also arrived in Sinyari and said that the locals had reached an agreement with the CDA in the Faisal Mosque last week.

He claimed that the authority had promised that the residents of the area would be given their rights but an anti-encroachment operation was launched anyway.

Aslam said that the CDA should clear dues owed to locals adn refrain from using force to evict them.

The protestors said that they would not leave their ancestral land without payment. They added that firing from the police had injured two children while severly injuring another young man.
