SC to take up ECP appeal in election delay case

The Supreme Court is set to take an appeal file dby the Election Commission of Pakistan in the election delay case. The case will be heard from August 31.

A three-member bench including Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar will hear the case.

The court had ruled that elections to the Punjab Assembly, which was dissolved in January, must be held on May 14.

However, the ECP filed a review petition and the elections did not take place.

Elections in Punjab and KP had become a hotly debated issue after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf dissolved the assemblies it dominated.

However, despite dragging on for months and a date being issued by the president, elections were never held.

The case had led to divisions among the Supreme Court bench hearing the case and had led to multiple judges separating themselves.

The ECP and government had argued against elections based on administrative reasons.
