PPP calls for elections within 90 days

The Pakistan Peoples Party called for elections to be held within the consitutionally mandated 90 days on Friday.

The party held a meeting of the Central Exceutive Committee in Karachi on Friday, which was chaired by Asif Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Major party leaders including Yousaf Raza Gillani, Nayyar Bokhari, Faryal Talpur and Aitzaz Ahsan were also in attendance.

The meeting discussed the country’s current political landscape and decided that elections should not go beyond 90 days.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Sherry Rehman said that there was no confusion over the fact that elections are supposed to be held within 90 days.

She also added that a PPP delegation would meet the Chief Election Commissioner on August 29 to discuss the upcoming elections and the party’s concerns will be voiced.

Rehman said that the PPP believes that the census results were ‘controversial’ and the CCI was told that that approving census results would not lead to any delay in elections.

She said that since the number of seats has not increased as a result of the census, the excuse of delimitations cannot be used to delay elections.
