Punjab CM vowes to restore vandalized churches in Jaranwala

Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has vowed to restore all churches vandalised by mob violence in Jaranwala on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Thursday during a meeting with representatives of the Christian community, the caretaker CM said that the riots in Jaranwala were condemnable and were the result of careful planning.

He also said careful efforts from the police had prevented loss of life in the riots.

He added that the government would make up for the losses suffered by the Christitan community and the churches vandalised in the riots would be restored in their original state. He added that repair efforts will be carried out in the next three to four days.

Naqvi said that the the Pakistan and Islam do not permit such events to take place.

Bishop Nadeem called for a transparent investigation into the riots of Wendesday.

Charged mobs had attacked churches and vandalised homes belonging to the Christian community in Jaranwala on Wednesday over alleged desecration of the Holy Quran. Things had spiraled out of control of the local administration and rangers were summoned for help.

A statement from the police said that over 100 people who were part of the mobs that vandalised churches and homes in Jaranawala had been arrested. The main suspect who incited the mobs has also been arrested.
