A district and sessions court in Islamabad has sent a civil judge’s wife, Somia Asim, to jail on judicial remand. She was arrested on Monday after a court ordered the police to arrest her in the maid torture case.
On Tuesday, the trial court of judge Shaista Kundi rejected the police request for the physical remand of the accused and ordered them to present the accused before it on August 22.
Somia is accused of beating and torturing her 13-year-old maid. The civil judge’s wife, who according to some media reports is suffering from mental illness, was arrested 20 days after registration of the first information report.
The accused told the court that she was kept in “mental torture” till 11:30 when she was grilled.
When asked about the progress in the investigation, the investigation officer told the court they needed the payment slip containing a record of remuneration.
Somia expressed her willingness to present every record but urged the court to end the “mental torture” inflicted on her. She also expressed her concerns over her media trial.
The investigation officer was silent when the judge asked can a request for physical remand of a female suspect be granted in such a case.
Later, Somia filed a bail application at the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad, requesting bail after arrest.
In her application submitted on Tuesday, she denied the reports of beating up Rizwana who was working at her house as a housemaid.
The plea further added that Rizwana was living at Somia’s house with her parents’ permission and the civil judge’s wife would treat her as her own.
Somia is an educated individual who has been wrongly indicted in this case, the application stated, adding that there is no evidence which could prove the accusation levelled against Somia.
