A few days after rescuers concluded that all aboard the Titan sub perished, it has been revealed that one passenger was chasing a world record.
Christine Dawood, who lost husband, Shahzada, and 19-year-old, Suleman, on the submersible recently told BBC in an interview that her son was an ehtusiastic fan of Rubik’s cubes.
The 19-year-old Suleman took a Rubik’s cube with him in the submersible, hoping to solve it 3,700 metres below sea level. He had even formally applied to Guinness World Record before making the ill-fated journey.
His father also took a camera with him to make a video of the moment when Suleman would attempt the record.
A video of Suleman posted by the BBC showed him solving the cube in under 20 seconds. The Dawood family also showed the BBC a photo of the boy wearing a Rubik’s cube on his head.
Christine also said in the interview that her husband was a man of child-like curiosity and was the kind of person who would make the family watch documentaries after dinner.
She also said that she had initially planned to go with her husband, but the plan could not be carried out due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When the plan was made again, she let her son take her spot because he was excited.
Christine and her 17-year-old daughter, Alina, also waited on the Titan’s support ship as the father and son dived under the water. She stayed aboard the ship for the rescue mission, eventually giving up hope after the search went on for 96 hours.
