Ahmadi lawyer arrested in Karachi for ‘using Syed’ in his name

An Ahmadiyya community lawyer was arrested in Karachi on Thursday for allegedly using “Syed” in his name. The case was registered on the complaint of another lawyer.

The first information report was filed at the City Court Police Station under Section 298-B (misuse of epithets, descriptions, and titles, etc, reserved for certain holy personages or places) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Complainant Advocate Mohammed Azhar Khan alleged that he observed Advocate Tariq had used “Syed” with his name in the affidavit while pleading a case during an appearance before a district judge.

He alleged that Tariq, being an Ahmadi, had deliberately affixed “Syed” with his name. He requested for a case to be registered against Advocate Tariq.

It was the second time in as many years that Advocate Ali Ahmed Tariq had been booked on similar charges, according to a statement issued by the Ahmadiyya Jamaat spokesperson.

Advocate Tariq was booked over similar allegations in November as well.

The spokesperson expressed his concerns over the lodging of two identical FIRs and at the same police station against the senior lawyer.
