Parliament to have final word on elections: Rana Sanaullah

Rana Sanaullah brought the call about holding provincial and national elections to the assembly floor simulatenously to the assembly floor on Wednesday and hinted that parliament has the right to change laws in the country.

In a long speech on the floor of the house, the interior minister said that the political crisis in Pakistan is ‘artificial’ and has been created by one person, presumably a reference to Imran Khan.

He also said that holding provincial elections in two provinces before elections to the National Assembly would lead to ‘controversial’ general elections.

The minister added that while the constitution mandated elections to a dissolved assembly withing 90 days, it also said that elections should be free and fair. He added that with provincial governments in place instead of caretaker governments, general elections would not be impartial.

He said that such elections would have especially impact Punjab which had over half the seats in the National Assembly.
