Barkhan woman freed from private jail speaks up

A woman who was freed from a private jail in Balochistan’s Barkhan district addressed a press conference in Quetta on Tuesday.

Giran Naz Bibi, her daughter and four sons were found at three locations in Barkhan on February 23 when protesters staging a sit-in in Quetta pressed for their releases. Tribal leaders from various tribes also backed the demands for their recovery.

On January 31, the bodies of two of Giran Naz Bibi’s sons and a woman were found in a well in Barkhan’s Haji Kot village, the ancestral village of Sardar Abur Rehman Khetran, who heads the Khetran tribe.

Initially, it was believed the dead woman was Giran Naz Bibi. However, when a postmortem examination revealed that she was a teenager who was killed after being raped, law enforcement agencies launched a search operation and found Giran Naz Bibi and her other children, a daughter and four sons, alive.

Giran Naz Bibi appeared before reporters for the first time on Tuesday.

She repeatedly pointed to the portrait of Abdur Rehman Khetran that she carried and said that the man had killed her grown up sons.

“This Sardar Abdur Rehman is the murderer. He is the murderer…” Giran Naz Bibi repeated and broke into tears.

She then trampled the portrait under her feet.

Giran Naz Bibi’s surviving children and husband, Khan Mohammad Marri, were also present at the press conference.

Khetran, who was arrested when the case made headlines, has been released on bail.

Khan Mohammad Marri urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the case and ensrue justice for the family.
