PTI Chairman Imran Khan has asked President Arif Alvi to order an ‘immediate inquiry’ against General (r) Bajwa for ‘violating his oath’.
Imran Khan made the demand to President Alvi as supreme commander of the armed forces in a letter on Thursday.
“Some very disturbing information has now come into the public domain whereby it is clear that General retd Bajwa as COAS violated his oath of office repeatedly,” the letter reads.
After listing out the ‘violations’ that were made by the former army chief as admitted in his interactions with two journalists, Imran Khan has asked Alvi to initiate an inquiry to see if these violations have indeed taken place.
“Therefore it is your constitutional duty as President and as Supreme Commander of the Armed forces to take this immediate action and institute an inquiry so as to establish whether such grave violations of the constitution and oath of office under the constitution have taken place.”
The letter contains references to General Bajwa’s recent interaction with journalist Javed Chaudhry where he said that he considered Imran Khan dangerous for the country.
Imran Khan also pointed out that the general had used the word ‘we’ in this interaction, and it is ‘worth ascertaining’ who this we refers to. He added that as army chief, general bajwa has no right to decide who should be in government.
“Taking such a right on himself is a clear violation of his oath as given in the third schedule Article 244 of the constitution,” he wrote.
He also referred to General Bajwa’s statement in the same interview where he said that a NAB reference against Shaukat Tarin was squashed. Imran wrote that this is also an example of the violation of the army chief’s oath because civilian autnomous bodies like NAB do not fall under the military’s control.
Imran Khan has also mentioned a vlog by anchor Aftab Iqbal, who said General Bajwa had told him he had recorded several meetings with Imran Khan. He described this as a violation of fundamental human rights.
“The question is why and under what authorisation was General Bajwa recording confidential conversations?”
As the final example of General Bajwa’s violation of oath, Imran says he ‘publicly’ went against Pakistan’s already declared policy of neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
