An 80-year-old woman identified as Fatima died of burns injuries in Lyari, Karachi on Saturday after trying to cook with firewood.

The fire brigade and rescue teams reached her house near Taj Joona Market but were unable to do much more. Neighbours said she was making rotis when the fire broke out.

Since the beginning of January, people have been protesting in multiple areas of Karachi as gas supplies dwindled.

On January 23, frustrated residents of Orangi Town and Baldia Town protested at the office of a gas company near Gulbai Chowrangi. People said they have had no gas for a whole month.

In December 2022, the managing director of Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd admitted that the domestic sector in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, was facing shortages because they had to supply industry. Factories had to come first. Levels could not be lowered because of court orders.
