Karachi mayor election to face long delays

Election Commission of Pakistan has said that Karachi will have to wait for its election of mayor until the elections in all 246 Union Councils (UCs) are held.

The election watchdog said that elections in 11 out of 246 UCs were still remaining and the election of the mayor could be possible only after the elections were held in all the constituencies.

The election took place in 235 UCs and was postponed in 11 UCs after some of the candidates passed away after submitting their nomination papers.

Following the local government (LG) elections in Karachi, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had rejected the results of the polls and filed complaints regarding rigging and incorrect vote count in six union councils of Karachi.

The data released by the ECP showed Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secured highest number of seats with 93 in the Karachi Division, while JI trailing behind with 88 seats.
