Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan urged Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to take notice of the firing incident during his long march in Wazirabad, adding that the nation was looking towards the chief justice for justice.
The PTI chief, while addressing supporters through a video link as the party’s long march resumed from Wazirabad a week after he was attacked, asked the chief justice that maintaining the rule of law in the country was the chief justice’s responsibility.
“If a former prime minister cannot register a case, what will the police do with the common man,” the former premier said.
“The government in Punjab is ours and someone else is running the police. We are going to become a banana republic,” the former premier said and added that the nation had lost its trust in the institutions.
The former prime minister urged the chief justice to also look into matters including FIR of Wazirabad attack, Azam Swati’s video scandal, and the brutal assassination of journalist Arshad Sharif.
Imran Khan said that Sharif’s video was played in a TV program. He asked how did a TV anchor get the video?
He said that earlier it was being told that Sharif was killed due to mistaken identity, but now it was clear that he was tortured and then shot.
Earlier in the day, new details from Sharif’s post mortem revealed that he was tortured before being shot to death from a close distance.
The former premier reiterated that he had knowledge about the assassination attempt on him, saying that the “plan” to assassinate him was first formulated in September and that their plan was to portray the assassination as an act of “religious extremism”.
He said that the accused Naveed had been told to say when he claimed that he had done it alone.
“The forensic [report] of the container has shown that there were two types of bullet, which means there were two shooters,” the PTI chief said.
Imran also hailed Ibtesam, the PTI supporter who saved the former prime minister and captured the attacker, for his “heroic effort”.
“The biggest tragedy was that of Moazzam Shaheed. We all did not see those pictures in which his children could be seen sitting next to the dead body of their father and trying to wake him up.”
He also announced that his party would take lifetime responsibility for the children of the victim who lost his life during the attack.
“Our march will not end,” vowed Imran and reiterated his commitment to the establishment of justice.
