Man impersonating army officer to extort citizens arrested in Karachi

KARACHI: Police have arrested a man for impersonation of an army officer and extortion from citizens in the remits of the Darakshan police station in Karachi.

The police said that the accused was involved in illegal activities and extortion by introducing himself as the brigadier of the Pakistan Army.

SSP South Asad Raza told reporters that a group of six accused were extorting innocent citizens for the past two years sometimes impersonating officers of the Pakistan Army and sometimes National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Raza said that in a recent incident, the accused pretended to be the director general of NAB and contacted the director of a government department demanding money. “The accused have taken Rs1.5 million from the director of the government department,” he added.

According to the police officials, the victim informed the police about the matter at the time when the accused was receiving the money from him, after which the Darakhshan police conducted an operation and arrested six accused including the group leader involved in extortion.

SSP South said that the arrested accused were identified as Syed Sajjad Ali, Majid Ali, Muhammad Mansoor, Muhammad Arsalan, Babar Ali, and Muhammad Owais.
