Yawar Iqbal, creative director at advertising agency J. Walter Thompson (JWT) dressed as Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, for Halloween, for which he donned a full white veil and covered his face with a niqab.
The budding actor put up pictures in his costume thanking Nabila’s Salon for the makeup (@nabila_salon), @tayyabsiddiquikhi for the outfit, and celebrity stylist Tabesh Khoja (@khojiiii) for help with the costume.
He posted a picture with producer Asad ul Haq and his wife Farah with all three dressed in costumes for a Halloween party. He captioned the picture ’“Lollywood”, “Maulviwood”, “Hollywood”.
Model and actor Areeba Habib shared a picture of Yawar’s costume on her Instagram story.
This was not well received by Twitter users, who called her out for mocking Bushra Bibi and ridiculing religious practices and her personal choice of covering herself.
One user called and said that the actress has low self-worth and that this was an attempt at dehumanization.
Another user who goes by the name @thefatimaN said that this cosplaying was sickening.
One user said she was shocked by the “pathetic sense of Pakistani celebrities”.
Areeba clarified she wasn’t the one dressed in the costume, in a tweet she later deleted.
A user also called out Nabila’s salon for participating.
Following the backlash, Areeba Habib posted an apology on her social media accounts. She said she was not mocking anyone and claimed that she wasn’t aware of what the post was related to, she was just appreciating the look. Habib added that she loves her religion and its attire.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my oversight. Will make sure, I am careful with my postings from here on. Apologies and Love, AH,” wrote Areeba Habib in her Instagram story.
