Analyst Ayaz Amir’s son arrested for wife’s murder

ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Ayaz Amir’s son, Shanawaz, killed his wife in Islamabad’s Chak Shahzad area apparently because of “domestic resentment”, the police said on Friday.

The police have arrested the suspect.

The victim, 37-year-old Sara, was a Canadian national and the third wife of the suspect. They were residing at Chak Shahzad’s farmhouse 46.

A heavy contingent of police was at the site and cordoned off the area.

The body was shifted to the Polyclinic Hospital for postmortem. They added that the incident occurred at 11:30pm on Thursday.

With the cause of death undetermined, sources said, the doctors have ordered a forensic test of the body. Sources within the police said that the victim was killed with a dumbbell, used for weight lifting.

Hospital sources say that samples have been taken from the victim’s liver, heart, lungs and stomach. The samples have been sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency.

“This is a heart-wrenching incident. Such an incident should not happen with anyone,” Ayaz Amir told reporters outside the house. “No one should have to bear such trauma.”

Sources said that a month ago Shawanaz and Sara had tied the knot. She arrived in Pakistan a week ago.

Sara was apparently killed because of “domestic resentment”, they added. Further investigation was under way.

Earlier, the Islamabad police confirmed the incident on social media. Senior police officers and forensic teams were on the spot.

Ayaz Amir became the top trend on Twitter after the incident.

One of the users expressed hope that the senior journalist would “pursue his son’s case” and let him “rot” in jail. But he alleged that the Islamabad police would use the son to blackmail Ayaz.

This Twitter user thought that men were the “problem” while reminding the people of the Noor Mukadam case.

One user asked Islamabad’s elite to consult a psychiatrist “as soon as possible”. The user supported her statement with an event where someone was talking about normalising cheating.

Some commented on Ayaz Amir’s association with PTI chief Imran Khan.

A user having the Twitter handle, Imran_Bukharey, urged people not to politicise a murder.
