PM Shehbaz highlights ‘man-made’ disaster during KP’s flood-hit areas visit

A “man-made disaster” was the term used by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in addition to natural calamity in reaction to buildings being swept away in flash floods that hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat and Kalam areas on August 26.

“The destruction near river… I will call it… this is a disaster and flash floods have hit the areas, very extreme, no doubt about it. But, because of wrong planning that I call a man-made disaster that hotels were constructed inside the river. It was wrong,” he told reporters after meeting the flood-hit people during a visit to flood-hit areas of KP

Officials briefed the premier was briefed on the relief efforts.

Videos of buildings in the tourist location being swept away in floods have been making rounds on social media. As many as 51,856 houses including 27,109 fully and 24.747, have so far been damaged in floods, showed the National Disaster Management Authority data.

“Efforts are under way for rehabilitation for people.”
