Heavy rains lashed several areas of the country on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, triggering flooding in rural as well as urban areas.

At least 14 people were killed and 14 others injured in heavy monsoon rain-triggered flash floods and other rain-related incidents during the last 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in its report issued on Thursday.

Five children and eight women were among those who lost their lives, the report said.

The NDMA has predicted more rains till August 24.

It said that rain-wind/thundershower is expected in Sindh, Balochistan, central/south Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

Heavy falls are also likely at scattered places in Sindh, eastern Balochistan, south Punjab and lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the period.

The total death toll from this season’s monsoon rains since mid-June has reached 649, including 139 women and 238 children, along with 1,030 others injured, the NDMA said.

Balochistan

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a renewed alert for monsoon rains in twenty districts of Balochistan.

Following the heavy rains and flash floods the roads from Quetta to Karachi, Taftan, Jhal Magsi and Zhob have been closed. Passengers have been asked to avoid travelling on national highways as heavy rains may trigger flash flooding.

Most of the villages of Musa Khel, Khuzdar, Pashin and Qila Abdullah districts are submerged in water.

The Pakistan Metrological Department has predicted that monsoon rains will continue till August 21 in the province.

There is a risk of flooding in the rivers due to the monsoon rains in Quetta, Musa Khel, Harnai, Sibi, Bolan, Lasbela, Khuzdar, Kech, and other areas, the PMD said.

Balochistan’s recorded rainfall included Kalat, Barkhan receiving 08mm, Zhob 07mm, Gwadar 03mm, Quetta (city 02mm, Samungli 01mm), Turbat 01mm whereas, in Kashmir, Kotli received 15mm, Muzaffarabad (city 12mm, airport 07mm), Rawalakot 11mm and Garhi Dupatta 02mm.

Karachi

The ongoing rains in Karachi will continue till night, more rains are predicted on August 23 and August 24, the PMD said on Thursday.

According to the meteorological department, more rainfall is expected in Karachi tonight and is expected to continue in interior Sindh till August 20.

Meanwhile, six members of a family and their driver, including four children, went missing after their car was swept away by a flood in the Malir river following heavy rain near Kathore, Sindh. According to the rescue officials, the car was travelling to Hyderabad from Karachi’s Quaidabad area.

The recorded rainfall in Karachi included: Gulshan-e-Hadeed 29mm, Saddar 23mm, Quaidabad 17mm, Korangi 09mm, Old Area Airport, Jinnah Terminal, Gadap Town, Saadi Town, University road 05mm. Kemari, Nazimabad 04mm, DHA, Faisal Base 03mm, Surjani, Orangi 01mm

Hyderabad

Heavy rains lashed parts of Hyderabad. Rainwater entered the houses in Latifabad and low-lying areas of Qasimabad.

Hyderabad received 24mm, Jacobabad 23mm, Mithi 18mm, Shaheed Benazirabad 16mm, Padidan 14mm, Badin 13mm, Larkana 10mm, Rohri 07mm, Sakrand 06mm, Dadu 04mm and in Mohenjo Daro 03mm of rainfall was recorded.

Interior Sindh

Following the intermittent rains, various highways across Sindh turned into ponds. The rainwater also entered the houses.

Meanwhile, due to the heavy rainfall two people, including a woman and a four-month-old minor girl, died and eight others sustained injuries when the roof of a house collapsed.

In Sindh the recorded rainfall in different cities and areas included: Thatta 79mm, Tando Jam 58mm, Khairpur 56mm, Chhor 46mm, Mirpur Khas 35mm, Sukkur 31mm.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the weather has become pleasant due to continuous rain, but 6 people have been killed and 6 injured in the incidents of walls and roofs collapsing in various places.

According to the Meteorological Department, more rain is expected during the next 24 hours, which may cause landslides and flooding in rivers and canals.

According to PDMA, 6 people have died and as many were injured.

In K-P, the rainfall recorded included: Cherat 57mm, Bacha Khan (airport) 41mm, Peshawar 31mm, Malam Jabba 29mm, Bannu 25mm, DI Khan (Airport 20mm, City 09mm), Kakul 16mm, Pattan 15mm, Kalam 14mm, Parachinar 13mm, Dir (Upper 08mm, Lower 05mm), Balakot, Mardan 03mm and Saidu Sharif 01mm.

South Punjab

Relief operations of the Pakistan Air Force are underway in the flood-affected areas of South Punjab.

According to a Pakistan Air Force spokesperson, the relief teams are providing food and medical facilities to the affected families round the clock.

Meanwhile, the roof of a house collapsed due to rain in the Telianwala area of Bahawalnagar district.

Three sisters who were sleeping in the room were buried under the debris. The rescue team carried out a rescue operation and recovered the bodies of the deceased sisters from the debris. The bodies were then shifted to the district hospital.

The deceased were identified as 24-year-old Nadira, 28-year-old Razia and 30-year-old Rubina.
