Two policemen guarding polio team killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank

TANK: At least two policemen, who were safeguarding the polio team in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank city, were killed when unidentified persons opened fire at them.

Constable Pir Rehman and Nisar were killed in the attack, sources in the police said, adding that the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Police Station Gomal. A heavy contingent of police left for the site of the incident.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police also shared the development on Twitter.

A national anti-polio campaign started on Monday in Karachi, Hyderabad and six districts of South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, North and South Waziristan, DI Khan and Tank. Parents should give every child up to five years of compulsory polio vaccine to protect their children from lifelong disability.

At least 14 polio cases have so far been reported in Pakistan this year and all of them are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident and lauded the services of the police force providing security to the polio team during vaccination drives.

“Police have made great sacrifices against terrorism. We salute the martyrs,” he said, “We will take rest after enemies of the health of the nation’s children are dead.”
