Headlines at 12 noon: Punjab by-poll, rain, Test match

  • As many as 175 candidates would contest the by-election on 20 Punjab seats to be held on Sunday (tomorrow). The election campaign ended on Friday night.

  • The Election Commission of Pakistan is all set for the by-polls. As many as 696 polling stations – out of the total 3,141 – have been declared sensitive by the ECP. Moreover, all four polling stations of Lahore have been declared sensitive.

  • The federal cabinet has decided to form a special committee to determine whether President Arif Alvi and former prime minister Imran Khan could be tried under Article 6 (high treason) of the Constitution. It also decided to form a committee on the Tayyaba Gul case.

  • PTI chief Imran Khan has challenged the government of trying him and other PTI leaders under Article 6. He warned of “saying those things to the court which he has not told the people”.

  • Rain was reported in Islamabad. Karachi also received showers. Many streets in the provincial capital are still inundated with rainwater.

  • At least 10 people died of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Health said. Around 700 new cases were reported.

  • Pakistan got full control in the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, with impressive bowling figures from Shaheen Shah Afridi, Yasir Shah, and Hasan Ali.
