American celebrities react to changes in US abortion law

This Friday the Supreme Court ruled that Americans no longer have a constitutional right to abortion and after the annulment of Roe v. Wade- women’s liberty to choose abortion, different celebrities have spoken about it.

Michelle Obama tweeted saying she feels “heartbroken” that the United States is returning to the “painful lessons of a time before Roe became the law of the land.”

The lawyer and former first lady said,

“For the teenager, full of enthusiasm and promise, who will not be able to finish school or live the life she wants because her state controls her reproductive decisions; by the mother of a non-viable pregnancy who is now forced to carry that pregnancy to term; for parents who see their child’s future evaporate before their very eyes; for healthcare workers who can no longer help them without risking jail time,” she wrote.

President Barack Obama said the Supreme Court not only overturned 50 years of history, but “relegated the most intensely personal decision anyone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues, attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”

Singer Taylor Swift retweeted Michelle Obama’s tweet, adding: “I am absolutely terrified that we are here, that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of it’s”.

African-American actress Viola Davis invited people to follow the fight. “Now more than ever we have to use our voice and power!” she wrote in a tweet.

Mexican-American actress and singer Lynda Carter, known for playing Wonder Woman, called the ruling’s overturning “a tragedy”.

“But one day, hopefully soon, we will find our way to a future where reproductive freedom is forever enshrined in federal law,” she added.

In an Instagram story, model Hailey Bieber said she was speechless. “This is really scary,” she said.

Actress Sophia Bush was a little more radical, affirming that these actions do not seek to end abortion, but rather safe abortion. “They will never end abortion. Only safe abortion. This is not about life. This is about control,” she said in a tweet.
