Actress Yasra Rizvi publically talks about Arooj Aftab and we are all for it

We love it when women hype up other women, and actress Yasra Rizvi did exactly that on Monday when she re-shared a clip of Aftab’s song ‘Udhero Na’ and complimented her soulful voice.

“Since I first heard her voice 10 years ago, I haven’t heard any so hauntingly lovely… simply soulful… terribly sorrowful… all sorts of free!” Yasra said in her Instagram story caption.

The Grammy winner has put up multiple snippets from her song, ‘Udhero Na’ since last week. Arooj questioned her followers in the caption if they’ve ever been “haunted by the memories of someone beautiful” from their past.

Aftab partnered with fellow Indian musician Anoushka Shankar for the song and even though the pairing was surprising, the end result was stunning. Aftab’s baritone voice, reminiscent of a young Abida Parveen, is perfectly enveloped by the sitar. The vocals with the accompanying music, tend to put you in a trance, urging you to reexamine the place ex-lovers still occupy in the heart.

The song was written in 2005, according to Aftab’s Instagram post, and it was later included in her album Vulture Prince. The tracks on the album are all about loss and feelings. ‘Udhero Na,’ means ‘to forcefully come off’ alluding to terrible memories of the past and how one must move on.
