Sindh barrages running out of water, departments alerted

SUKKUR: The Sindh barrages are running out of water because of the lack of rain in the country’s upper parts, prompting the provincial irrigation department to issue an alert.

“The water crisis in Sindh can further increase. Tarbela dam has reached the dead level due to no rain in the upper parts of the country,” the Sindh Irrigation Department said in a statement on Sunday and issued an alert to all the departments concerned.

Earlier this month the Indus River System Authority had also issued an alert to all provinces

It read that the Chashma barrage is also at dead level from the past 48 hours as its flow decreased from 122,000 cusecs of water to 75,000. Moreover, the flow of water in the Taunsa barrage also decreased from 92,3000 cusecs of water to 74,300 while a shortage of 5,000 cusecs of water was recorded at the Guddu barrage.

It has further caused water shortage in canals, adding that the shortage of water is also expected at the Sukkur barrage in the next 24 hours.
