India regrets accidental firing of missile to Pakistan, opens inquiry

India on Friday said it regrets the March 9 incident in which a missile was "accidentally" launched from India and entered Pakistani territory, crashing in Mian Channu area area of Khanwal district in Punjab.

"The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry," Indian Ministry of Defence said in a statement released on Friday, while blaming the incident on a technical malfunction.

"While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident," the statement read.

Earlier on Thursday Director General Inter Services Public Relation (DG ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar while addressing a press conference regarding the incident had strongly condemned the incident and said that the projectile that fell in Punjab's Mian Channu was a supersonic missile.
