Veteran playwright Anwar Maqsood’s most awaited upcoming play ‘Saadhay 14 August’ will be staged at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi after Eid. Directed by Dawar Mehmood, the play will also travel to Islamabad and Lahore.
‘Saadhay 14 August’ is the last part of the 14 August trilogy, which Maqsood first started in 2011. Speaking about the series at a press conference at the Arts Council, the writer said, “Someone asked me what does that mean, why not 14 August? I replied I’m waiting for 14 August. Whenever 14 August will come [in the true sense] I will do a play with that title… Three years later I wrote Sawa 14 August. Everyone thought that now, after Imran Khan came to power, I would write 14 August.”
Delving in the details of the story of the play, he said, “In the play a man files a case against Quaid and Gandhi as to who is responsible for the decline of a huge state such as India — three countries were made out of it. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Then they’re asked to go to four cities to find out who’s responsible. They cities are Kashmir, Lahore, Delhi and London. So the play is divided into four parts. First the Quaid and Gandhi go to Kashmir, then Lahore, Delhi and London.”
The play will be staged at the Arts Council theatre in Karachi after Eid.
Maqsood’s son Bilal Maqsood posted about the play on his Twitter profile.
Responding to his tweet many theatre enthusiasts expressed their excitement for the upcoming play.
“Can't wait I love the 14 Aug series sooo much and it's been so long since I've seen a play too,” said one user.
Speaking at the press conference, president Arts Council Ahmed Shah had said that entertainment activities such as screenings of films and staging of play was put on hold because of the pandemic. Now that things look a little favorable, resuming of these activities merited a big event, which is going to be the staging of ‘Saadhay 14 August.’
