TikTok says it removed at least 6m Pakistani videos between July-Sept 2021

Short-form video making app TikTok removed at least 6 million Pakistani videos between July to September 2021 from its platform for violating the community guidelines, according to a latest report published in the last week.

In the TikTok's Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for the 2021's third quarter, Pakistan ranked fourth for violating the platform's guidelines, while the United States topped the list with the removal of at least 13 million videos from the app's platform, followed by Indonesia and Brazil on third and fourth number respectively with at least six million videos removed from both the countries separately.

Out of the 91 million videos removed from the platform in the third quarter of 2021, 50% videos were removed for violating minor safety policy of the app, while 5% videos were removed in violation of harassment and bullying policy. These removed videos comprised 1% of all videos uploaded on the app during the stated time period.

Further breakdown of the removed videos from the app's platform during the stated time period revealed that 95% videos were removed before a user reported it, 88% before the video received any views, and 93% within 24 hours of being posted.

Another report from January to June 2021 was published by the platform in December last year which comprised more than 2,000 requests made by different countries' governments for removal of the content.

Data from Pakistan showed that the platform received 94 requests from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government to remove or restrict content or accounts, including requests with inaccurate URLs. Another 24,201 requests were sent by the federal government for valid content URLs, excluding any acceptable form of an account.

In response to the Pakistan government’s demands for removal or restriction of content or accounts, TikTok rate was 98%.

The governments' requests for removal of the content report did not mention neighbouring country India.

The platform also updated its community guidelines to further support the well-being of the users and the integrity of the platform.

On February 8, the platform announced updates and those will be implemented over the next few weeks. Some of the main updates include:

  • Strengthening dangerous acts and challenges policy
  • Broadening approach to eating disorders
  • Adding clarity on the types of hateful ideologies prohibited on the platform
  • Expanding the policy to protect the security, integrity, availability, and reliability of the platform
